OGC Peter Gordon Attorney

Professional Summary

Peter Gordon co-founded Patent GC, a predecessor to Outside GC, and has more than 35 years of experience, in-house and in private practice, helping organizations develop, protect, and manage intellectual property as a strategic business asset. He advises universities, established corporations, growth-stage businesses, and startups on building IP programs that support innovation, commercialization, competitive strategy, and long-term business objectives.

Peter’s practice focuses primarily on patent matters, including strategic management of patent portfolios, patent preparation and prosecution, counseling on the protection of artificial intelligence and machine learning innovations, and serving as fractional in-house IP counsel. Drawing on his technical background and years of in-house leadership, he helps identify which innovations are worth protecting and build the operations to manage them, including portfolio management processes, internal policies, budgets, key performance indicators for portfolio evaluation, and processes for managing outside counsel.

Peter’s clients have developed a wide range of technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning (the subject of his undergraduate robotics research at MIT), operating systems, computer hardware, distributed software systems, automation, signal processing, speech and image recognition, video and audio technologies, wearable devices, human-machine interfaces, medical devices, bioinformatics, predictive modeling, and electronic health record systems.

Prior to co-founding Patent GC, Peter served as Director of Intellectual Property for Avid Technology, where he led the company’s IP function and numerous cross-functional projects, including product development and promoting new standards. His work included establishing company-wide policies and processes for open source and commercial software license compliance, developing patent and technology licensing programs, and working with engineering teams to identify, protect, and license innovations supporting Avid’s core video editing product.

Peter began his intellectual property career as a patent agent while attending law school. He earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and his bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Peter has been a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a professional society for computer scientists, for over 35 years.

In his free time Peter enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, playing saxophone, writing, and volunteering with service organizations around his hometown of Salem, MA. He is part of his church’s senior leadership team, leading ministries and retreats and managing communications. He is also in training to be a spiritual director in the Carmelite tradition.
