Ray Sczudlo brings more than 20 years of legal and business experience in the areas of finance, health care, and technology, with a particular focus on corporate finance, corporate governance, mergers, acquisitions, venture funding, and healthcare safety and risk management issues. He also has broad experience as a board member, executive, and trusted business and legal advisor.

Ray currently acts as an advisor and general counsel to early and growth stage companies focused on healthcare technology and cybersecurity. Over the course of his professional career, he has led numerous projects and teams working on large IT projects, SaaS and technology transfer arrangements, as well as revenue bonds and captive insurance.

For more than 10 years, Ray served as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Children’s National Health System, a leading U.S. pediatric medical institution based in Washington, D.C., with 6,000 employees and an annual operating budget of over $1 billion, where he oversaw all legal matters, including compliance, internal audit, contracts, joint ventures, leases, IT and operating agreements, insurance, corporate governance, and safety and risk management.

Prior to joining Children’s National, Ray served in a business development and legal counsel role for a variety of companies specializing in telemedicine, internet video, and digital security. Previously, he was a partner in the international law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, with a practice focused on banking, finance, corporate, venture funding, mergers, acquisitions, commercial and technology law, and international transactions.

Ray is a former adjunct faculty member at the George Washington University Law Center, where he taught banking and finance, and has authored numerous articles on banking, technology, investment, capital markets, and regulatory and policy issues.

Ray has served as a director of Children’s National Health System, including a term as chairman, and of several of its subsidiaries, including SafeKids Worldwide, the Children’s Hospital Foundation, and captive insurance company Bearacuda RE. He currently serves on the Board of the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and is a former board member of ReveraGen BioPharma (a clinical-stage drug development company developing a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compound for the treatment of Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy), VitelNet (a telemedicine company), and the World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C.

Ray holds a Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Case and Note Editor of the journal Law and Policy in International Business, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit.

Ray and his wife, Deborah, live in Washington, D.C., and, on occasion, in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Ray is a hiker, cook, and avid reader with a 2,000-volume library including history, biography, science, philosophy, and fiction — and is hoping to someday better organize it.
